Issue #24

Hi Reader,

From our classroom in Dubai, where the sunlight still lingers long into December, I find myself thinking about winter, its rituals, and the warmth we create beyond the weather.

As winter and the holidays approach, we find ourselves once again turning toward the warmth and comfort of light. Candles in windows, lanterns on doorsteps, sparkling streets — every culture, in its own way, has learned to kindle brightness as the days grow shorter. From the dancing flames of Diwali to the quiet glow of Advent candles, from Hanukkah’s enduring oil to the fire festivals that honour the solstice around the world, humanity has always answered the darker season with illumination.

This time of year also invites us to recognise the equilibrium that nature models so beautifully: light and dark, cold and warmth, stillness and gathering, reflection and celebration. As the season shifts, we’re reminded that both sides of this contrast are essential. The quiet of winter makes the glow feel brighter, the darkness makes the spark more meaningful.

This year, the iDiscover community celebrates not only the festive lights that brighten our homes, but also the deeper light we carry within us: curiosity, connection, resilience, and hope. May the weeks ahead inspire you to notice the sparks — in one another, in our stories, and in the experiences we create together — and to find harmony in the interplay of shadow and shine.

I hope you enjoy the read!

Something To Explore

When the Table Becomes a Place of Real Connection

As the holidays draw near and many of us prepare to gather with family and friends, I’ve been thinking a lot about the quality of our conversations — the warmth they can bring, and the misunderstandings that can sometimes sneak in. With that in mind, I wanted to share an article I wrote on Medium, “7 Insights on the Art & Science of Intentional Communication.”

These ideas come from years of observing how we connect, listen, and express ourselves — and from my own learning curve, especially around the dinner table during the holidays. My hope is that these insights offer gentle, practical ways to bring more presence, clarity, and care into our conversations this season.

I’d love for you to explore it, and I hope it supports more meaningful, intentional moments around your festive gatherings.

Something To Reflect On

A Short Read from Rumi

“Inside every human being is a lamp, and that lamp is lit by the presence of love. But unless we turn inward, we walk in the dark with the lamp unlit. The moment we look within, the flame rises, and we begin to see that all the walls and all the distances were illusions created by the absence of our own light.”
Rumi

Questions to ask ourselves: What beliefs or stories do I hold that make me feel small, disconnected, or in the dark? Where in my life am I relying on external validation instead of my own inner guidance? How would my relationships change if I saw others as lamps waiting to be lit too?

Something To Experience

The Candle-Lighting Ceremony at Mar Saba

Each year, from December 17 to 19, the cliffs of the Kidron Valley glow with a breathtaking ritual of light. At the ancient Mar Saba Monastery — built into the rugged Judean Desert east of Bethlehem — monks and local Bedouins join together to light hundreds of candles that illuminate the steep stone walls surrounding the monastery.

This tradition began around sixty years ago, following the return of Saint Sabbas’s body from Venice, and it continues to honour his memory. The Greek Orthodox Church marks the anniversary of his death on December 18th, and the candle-lighting has become a moving expression of reverence, continuity, and community.

Visitors from near and far come to witness the monastery transformed into a constellation of flickering light. Many bring their own candles, adding their glow to the shimmering tapestry that blankets the valley.
For anyone seeking a profound and contemplative experience of light in the darkness, this ceremony offers a rare and unforgettable glimpse into one of the region’s most sacred traditions.
